In the initial phases of the SEaOS project, 70 seals from South Shetland (Livingston Island), Macquarie Island, Kerguelen, and South Georgia were equipped with data collection tags. During the course of two seasons these animals provided a wealth of data. This methodically recorded log of animal exploration provided researchers, at one and the same time, with both a revealing narrative of seal distribution, habitat, and behaviour, and also with detailed profiles of previously unstudied areas of the ocean.
In terms of technical achievement, and data gathered, both biological, and oceanographic, the project was remarkably successful.
