Eudora winding down . . .
As announced in an earlier Newsletter, Qualcomm, the manufacturers of the Eudora e-mail client, have now withdrawn their support for the product. Only the latest versions of the product will continue to function in “Sponsored” mode; earlier versions will now revert to “Light” mode (with reduced features).
Eudora users apparently still have the following options, although it is not yet clear what the future holds for this program – for example, the date for reversion to “Light” mode was sporadically advanced by several weeks.
- continue using a current fully paid-for version of Eudora (if you have one)
- purchase a full licence for the latest version of Eudora (7.1 for Windows or 6.2.4 for Mac) before 30 April
- upgrade to the latest version before 31 March in order to continue using the additional features that are available in Eudora “Sponsored” mode
- continue with an earlier version of Eudora, using the reduced functionality of “Light” mode
- move over to using Mozilla Thunderbird for e-mail
For a number of reasons which have been discussed in earlier Newsletters, IT Services advises users to take the last option. Instructions for installing Thunderbird and importing messages from Eudora are available, and help can be had from the Helpdesk. See:
