On-line credit card payments

Throughout the academic year 2001/2002, students wishing to pay IT Services for their connection to the data network in halls of residence (ResNet) have been able to do so by making an on-line credit or debit card payment. This has worked well, and around 1200 students (representing about two-thirds of the students requesting payments) have chosen to pay in this way.

Since October 2001, a team has been working on a broader e-commerce project to develop a system for on-line payments to the University using credit and debit cards. It is based on a shopping basket (which allows you to pay for several things with one transaction) and uses the facilities of WorldPay, a secure on-line payment service provider. The University does not keep payment card details and has no plans to do so.

The result is that that the University can now take payments in a secure way over the Internet for a number of goods and services from customers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week regardless of their location.

The system has been developed so that the payment transactions are automatically uploaded into existing Finance systems, thus reducing the effort and time required for manual data entry.

Departments whose goods/courses/services are included in the shopping basket are notified by e-mail of every successful purchase. The e-mail contains details of the transaction together with details of the customer required by the Department.

One other feature is that a Department that has been taking credit card details on paper and passing them to the Cash Office for processing is now able to enter the payment details on-line and find out in real time whether the payment has been accepted or not.

Whilst the commission cost of these payments to the University is less than the usual cost, it should be noted that, with the exception of student payments for charges held in the University's central finance system, departments accepting credit card payments will be responsible for paying the commission.
