Current computing courses

Courses are held in classrooms where you need a Sun account in order to "log in" to the computers. A Sun account is sometimes referred to as an "e-mail account" because it is what provides you with your username and password for e-mail. If you don't already have one, you should obtain a Sun account before attending your course.

Word and Excel

This course offers both beginners and more experienced users a chance to practise and learn new techniques in word-processing and spreadsheets. We shall use Office97 on the PCs. You will work at your own pace through either the Word or the Excel training material, or both.

Introduction to Databases and MS Access

This course introduces the main features of Microsoft Access and discusses some of the issues involved in designing databases. For those most interested in the report writing features of Access there will be an opportunity to concentrate on these.

Presentations with PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a program that enables you to create overhead projector slides or on-line "slide-shows". This course introduces the basics of PowerPoint and gives you an opportunity to try out a data projector to present your slides.

This talk is aimed at those who commission Web pages (eg heads of departments) as well as those who design and write them. Its purpose is to raise awareness of accessibility issues involved in the design of Web pages to make them much more readable by anyone, with or without disabilities.

Creating and publishing documents on the World Wide Web

This course consists of a general outline of the issues involved in publishing on the Web, with opportunities for practice in writing Web pages, transferring them to the Web server and making them visible to the world.

Both Macs and PCs will be available for the practical part of the course.

The course material is available for you to look at in advance of the course or to use on your own.
