Unix service development - and a farewell

Information on staff retirements to take effect at the end of July was given in last month's IT Services Newsletter. Since then, Ian Angles, Unix systems specialist, has resigned his post and will be leaving St Andrews in August after ten years valuable service. As many readers will know, Ian provided the main support for IT Services Unix systems. He was employed co-incident with the introduction of Unix into the computing service and has held prime responsibility for its practical deployment and support since then. The utility and stability of the Unix service is in no small measure a tribute to his work.

Unfortunately, until his post is filled, there will be limited opportunity to develop the service further. Usually, a lot of Unix system hardware and software upgrades or replacement takes place over the summer months and this will not be the case this year.

We wish Ian every success in his future career and trust he copes well with the early morning starts and commuting to Edinburgh. We hope that his e-mail signature, "The Late" Ian Angles, will not signify his arrival times at his new place of employment.
