Medicine A100 funding arrangements

• Home-funded fee status

  For the first three years of the A100 programme, which take place at St Andrews, you may be eligible to apply to SAAS for payment of tuition fees.

  You may also be eligible to apply for a means-tested maintenance loan, bursary and supplementary grants as applicable. You should contact SAAS for details on eligibility.

  For years four, five and six, tuition fees will depend on which partner medical school you continue on to.

  Scottish medical schools

  • Year 4 – you may be eligible to apply to SAAS for payment of tuition fees. You may also be eligible to apply for means-tested maintenance loan, bursary and supplementary grants as applicable. You should contact SAAS for details on eligibility. 
  • Years 5 and 6 – Department of Health pays tuition fees (see more information below). You may also be eligible to apply for a means-tested NHS bursary or supplementary grant, or a non means-tested loan as applicable.

  English medical schools

  • Year 4 – you may be eligible to apply to SAAS for a repayable tuition fee loan up to the level set by the English partner medical school. You may also be eligible to apply for means-tested maintenance loan, bursary and supplementary grants as applicable.
  • Years 5 and 6 – Department of Health pays tuition fees (see more information below). You may also be eligible to apply for a means-tested NHS bursary or supplementary grant, or a non means-tested loan as applicable.

  Check the University of Manchester and Barts and the London websites for annual fees.

  Although the Department of Health pays for fees in years 5 and 6, Scottish domiciled students should apply to SAAS for support as they administer the arrangement for the Department of Health. Check the NHS Student Bursaries website for up-to-date details.

• RUK (England, Wales, Northern Ireland) fee status

  For the first three years of the A100 programme, which take place at St Andrews, you may be eligible to apply for a non means-tested tuition fee loan from Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, or Student Finance Northern Ireland. 

  You may also be eligible to apply for a means-tested maintenance loan.

  For years four, five and six, which take place at partner institutions, tuition fees are:

  • Year 4 – you may be eligible to apply for a non means-tested tuition fee loan from Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, or Student Finance Northern Ireland. You may also be eligible to apply for a means-tested maintenance loan.
  • Years 5 and 6 – Department of Health pays tuition fees (students need to be in attendance on 1 December to receive the tuition fee support (see more information below). Students may be eligible for non means-tested and means-tested NHS bursaries and supplementary grants, and reduced rate means-tested maintenance loans from SFE, SFW, SFNI.

  Although the Department of Health pays for fees in years 5 and 6, English, Welsh and Northern Irish student should apply directly to the appropriate NHS Bursary Unit for bursary support and to local authority for other grants. Check the NHS Student Bursaries website for up-to-date details.

• Republic of Ireland fee status

  You may be eligible to apply to SAAS for a tuition fee loan – please contact SAAS directly for more details.

• Overseas fee status

  NHS student bursaries are not available to overseas students.

  The Scottish Government has introduced a mandatory new national levy for overseas medical students for each year of study to cover the costs of NHS clinical teaching, which is reflected in the tuition fee. Fees may increase annually during the course of your study by up to 5% or up to the amount of the levy.

  A100 entrants should check the University of Manchester website for annual fees for overseas students.
