Direct entry to second year Computer Science MSci (Hons) 2018 entry

It is possible for students applying for the Computer Science MSci single Integrated Masters degree to enter directly into the second year of study, meaning you will complete your degree in only four years instead of five.

This option is offered to students with excellent Advanced Higher, A-Level or International Baccalaureate qualifications.

Students who enter directly to second year will take modules required by the Computer Science MSci programme from second year on, with the exception that they will take an accelerated version of the Foundations of Computation module. It includes necessary background material from core first-year modules, as well as the same content as the Foundations of Computation module.

Direct entry students will have the opportunity to study abroad during their second year of study.

The following are likely grades considered for an offer. St Andrews offers a variety of flexible entry options and considers all aspects of every application, including context, equivalent qualifications and the personal statement, and offers may be higher or lower than the grades stated here.

SQA Advanced Highers and Highers

AAAB at Highers, including A in Mathematics and A in an approved science. Plus AB at Advanced Highers, including A in Mathematics and an approved science. Approved sciences include:

  • Biology or Human Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computing Science or equivalent
  • Geography
  • Physics
  • Psychology.
Evidence of previous programming experience is also required.
GCE A-Levels

AAA, including Mathematics and one of the following:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computing Science or equivalent
  • Geography
  • Geology
  • Physics
  • Psychology.
Evidence of previous programming experience is also required.
IB points

39, including HL6 in Mathematics.

Evidence of previous programming experience is also required.

International applicants

If English is not your first language you will need an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking), or an equivalent English Language qualification.

Timetables

St Andrews students must meet with their Adviser of Studies at the beginning of Semester 1 in September to complete advising – a compulsory part of the matriculation process. After module choices have been decided, a timetable will be allocated indicating the dates and times of classes.
