Course information

The MLitt in English Language Teaching is designed to be useful to experienced English language teachers as well as those considering English language teaching in the future. The foundations of applied linguistics in the first semester are developed and applied to classroom observations and practice during the second semester.

Graduates from the programme will have gained an in-depth understanding of the theory of second language acquisition and current thinking on teaching second language teaching methodology, and will have had an opportunity to observe a variety of language classes and reflect on their own teaching and learning contexts.

Course highlights

  • Experience small group teaching in a supportive environment.
  • Explore current teaching technologies and the use of electronic resources.
  • Consider the variety and complexity of English language teaching contexts, globally.

Teaching format

The taught portion of the course consists of four compulsory modules and a range of optional modules held over two semesters. Classes are delivered through a mixture of lectures and seminars.

You will spend the summer months focusing on researching and writing a final dissertation of no more than 15,000 words.

If students choose not to complete the dissertation requirement for the MLitt, there are exit awards available that allow suitably qualified candidates to receive a Postgraduate Diploma. By choosing an exit award, you will finish your degree at the end of the second semester of study and receive a PGDip instead of a MLitt.
